Seoul, Korea - Many software developers in Korea say, “I wish I were somewhere else, if I could,” not because they don’t like what they do, but because they are fed up with the working environment where the developers are unilaterally demanded to sacrifice and such environment failed to suggest them any stable future. A software engineer working for a security software company commented, “not only the workload is killing me, but the company expects the engineers to become managers when the time comes, and not all of us can be the managers. I wish I could keep developing, but I don’t know how long I can do that.”
In a survey conducted by Korea IT Industry Promotion Agency in 2005, the average annual salary of American software developer was 3.2 times higher than that of Korean developers. Time has passed, but the gap seems to be as wide as it used to. According to the Payscale, a global salary information site, the average annual salary of software developers in Korea was USD 33,000, while that in America was USD 75,000. The software engineer ranked the first in promising jobs in many vocational researches in the U.S.
“Many friends of mine who received scholarships from engineering scholarship foundations studied hard to become medical doctors later in Korea. But in the U.S., being a computer engineer opens many doors to employment.” “I can balance my work and family here, and many people tell me that I am such a hard-working, when I am working not as hard as I used to back at home,” commented an ex-Korean software developer who went to a U.S. school to study computer engineering further.

소프트웨어 개발자들이 자주 하는 이야기가 있다. “할 수만 있다면 해외로 나가고 싶다”는 것이다. 일이 싫어서가 아니다. 희생을 당연시하는 근무환경에 대한 회의와 미래에 대한 불안감에서다. 보안 소프트웨어 업체에 다니는 이 모씨는 “업무량도 많지만 일정 시간이 되면 조직은 개발자보다 관리자가 되길 원하기 때문에 이 일을 언제까지 할 수 있을지 걱정”이라고 말했다.
김상훈 씨(가명)가 한국을 떠난 이유도 그랬다. 김 씨는 컴퓨터와 프로그램을 좋아해 일찍부터 개발자의 꿈을 가졌다. 하지만 병역특례로 벤처에서 일한 경험은 그 꿈을 포기하게 했다. 그는 “고된 프로젝트 일정으로 야근이 반복되는 생활을 견딜 자신이 없었다”고 말했다.
김 씨는 미국 유학길에 올랐다. 전공도 바꿨다. 하지만 가슴속 꿈은 쉽게 잊히지 않았다. 다시 소프트웨어 공부를 시작했다. 낯선 환경에서의 도전. 수많은 시행착오가 있었다. 하지만 도전을 계속했고 그 결과 글로벌 IT 업체에 소프트웨어 개발자로 입사했다.
한국과 미국을 모두 경험한 그가 느끼는 가장 큰 차이는 무엇일까.
“사실 미국도 이공계 기피 현상이 예전부터 있어 왔습니다. 다만 이공계 인력에 대한 연봉이 높은 편이고 대우도 상당히 좋습니다. 그리고 부족한 인력들은 세계에서 유입되는 인재들로 채워지기 때문에 ICT 산업이 발전한다고 생각합니다.”
지난 2005년 한국소프트웨어진흥원 조사에서 미국의 소프트웨어 개발자 임금은 우리나라의 3.2배였다. 시간이 꽤 지났지만 이 차이는 여전해 보인다. 글로벌 연봉정보 사이트 페이스케일에 따르면 국내 SW 개발자의 평균연봉은 3만3300달러 수준인 반면 미국은 7만5000달러였다. 미국 내 소프트웨어 엔지니어는 각종 직업 관련 조사에서 유망 직업 1순위다.
“많은 친구들이 이공계 장학금을 받으면서도 열심히 공부해서 의학 전문 대학원으로 진학합니다. 저는 의대는 별로 흥미가 없었고 돌파구로 전공을 바꿔 미국으로 왔습니다. 다시 프로그래머가 될지는 몰랐는데 미국에서는 취직하기가 컴퓨터 전공만한 것이 없었습니다. 지금 삶에 대해서는 누구보다 만족하고 있습니다. 대우도 그렇지만 여기서는 가정과 일의 균형을 찾을 수 있습니다. 한국 사람만큼 열심히 일하고 성실한 사람들을 찾기 힘들다고 합니다. 개인적으로 더 많은 사람들이 미국이든 호주든 외국으로 나와서 새로운 기회를 찾았으면 좋겠습니다.”
젊은 인재들의 소프트웨어 기피 해법은 가까이 있을지 모른다.
