SEOUL, KOREA – CJ HelloVision, South Korea's largest cable provider and subsidiary of conglomerate CJ Media Group, has been a vigorous corporate raider on the hunt for SOs (system operators).
South Korean MSO (multiple system operator) CJ HelloVision said Tuesday that it acquired cable channel HBC at nearly KRW 124 billion, seizing a 89.62% stake in HBC.
Once the deal is finalized, CJ HelloVision will own a total of 21 SOs. CJ HelloVision already purchased a series of SOs, including Dream City Television, Shilla, Nara and YBN.
CJ HelloVision’s such moves are interpreted as its strategy to expand its subscriber pool, raise its competitiveness and pursue economies of scale, which are needed for the convergence of broadcasting and communications.
CJ HelloVision mentioned, “We are acquiring SOs in a bid to enhance our competitiveness through economies of scale.”
Under the current broadcasting laws, cable TV operators are banned from owning more than a third of the 77 broadcasting service areas nationwide and more than a third (about 5 million) of the cable TV-watching households nationwide .

CJ헬로비전, 한국케이블TV호남방송 인수
복수종합유선방송사업자(MSO)인 CJ헬로비전이 잇따라 개별 SO를 인수하며 덩치 키우기에 나섰다.
CJ헬로비전(대표 변동식)은 25일 한국케이블TV호남방송을 1239억9200만원에 인수했다고 밝혔다. 취득 주식수는 156만7400주로 지분율은 89.62%다.
인수가 완료되면 CJ헬로비전은 총 21개 SO를 보유하게 된다. CJ헬로비전은 이에 앞서 횡성유선방송, 영서방송, 드림씨티방송, 신라방송, 나라방송 등을 인수한바 있다.
CJ헬로비전의 잇단 M&A 행보는 가입자 확대와 지역 경쟁력 강화는 물론이고 갈수록 고도화되는 방송통신 융합에 필요한 `규모의 경제`를 이루려는 전략으로 풀이된다.
CJ헬로비전은 “SO 인수를 통한 규모의 경제 실현으로 경쟁력 확보”가 인수 목적이라고 밝혔다.
업계 관계자는 “유료방송 경쟁사는 700만명이 넘는 가입자 확보가 가능하지만 MSO는 덩치를 키워도 그 절반밖에 되지 않는다”며 “동일서비스 동일규제로 권역 제한과 가입자 규제 제한을 풀어야 한다”고 말했다.
현재 방송법에 의거, 케이블TV 사업자는 전국 77개 방송구역 중 3분의 1(25개), 전국 케이블TV 가구수 중 3분의 1(약 500만명)을 초과하는 게 금지돼 있다.
