SEOUL, KOREA – South Korea’s exports ticked up a mere 0.6% y-o-y in the first half of this year. Exports reversed its course and declined in June in four months.
According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE), South Korea’s exports inched up 0.6% y-o-y to USD 276.7 billion in the January-June period while its imports shrank 2.6% to USD 257.1 billion during the same period. And South Korea posted a trade surplus of USD 19.6 billion, up 80% from last year’s USD 10.9 billion.
The disappointing export growth in the first half can be blamed on decreased exports to Japan (because of the weak yen) and to the EU (due to the EU fiscal crisis) and dullness in the shipbuilding and steel industries. Exports of vessels and steel tumbled 25.3% and 11.9%, respectively.
The information and technology (IT) sector buttressed South Korea’s exports. Exports of wireless communications devices led by smartphones ascended 30% y-o-y and the home appliance sector, backed by energy-saving lights and premium TVs, logged a 10.3% growth in exports. Exports of semiconductors increased 8.6%.

상반기 수출 증가율 0.6%에 머물러
상반기 수출 증가율이 0.6%에 그쳐 사실상 제자리걸음을 걸었다. 마지막 달인 6월 수출은 지난 2월 이후 4개월 만에 감소세로 들아섰다.
1일 산업통상자원부에 따르면 1~6월 수출액은 전년 동기 대비 0.6% 늘어난 2767억달러로 집계됐다. 수입은 같은 기간 2.6% 감소한 2571억달러를 기록했다. 무역수지 흑자 규모는 196억달러로 지난해 109억달러에 비해 80% 큰 폭으로 증가했다.
상반기 수출 증가율이 소폭에 머문 것은 엔저와 유럽 재정위기로 인해 대 일본, EU 수출이 감소한 가운데 선박•철강 등 일부 업종 부진이 겹친 탓이다. 선박과 철강 수출은 각각 25.3%, 11.9%씩 감소했다.
그나마 대외여건 악화 속에서 수출 증가세를 지킨 것은 정보기술(IT) 분야였다. 스마트폰을 중심으로 한 무선통신기기 수출이 지난해에 비해 30% 증가했다. 가전 분야도 절전형 조명기기 수요 확대와 프리미엄 TV 수출 증가에 힘입어 10.3% 증가세를 보였다. IT 분야에서 가장 큰 비중을 차지하는 반도체도 8.6% 증가했다.
비IT 분야에서는 석유화학(7.7%), 자동차부품(5.1%) 등이 선전했다. 선박 수출을 제외하면 상반기 수출 증가율은 3.3%로 높아진다.
지역별로는 일본과 EU 쪽 수출이 부진했다. 일본 수출이 11.5% 감소했고, EU 수출도 3.8% 줄었다. ASEAN, 중국 등으로 수출은 각각 10%, 9.8% 씩 증가해 일본, EU에서 부진을 상쇄했다.
권평오 산업부 무역투자실장은 “엔저 등 대외악재로 상반기 수출은 소폭 증가에 그쳤지만 하반기에는 미국 경기회복 추세에 따른 글로벌 수요 증가와 선박 수출 개선으로 수출 증가율이 높아질 것”이라고 예상했다.
