SEOUL, KOREA - Internet surfing accounted for the largest part in Koreans' data use on their smartphones. According to U.S. market research firm Strategy Analytics, Korea's annual smartphone data usage volume stood at 150.6 petabyte (PB) last year. 1 PB is equivalent to 1,024 terabyte (TB). 1 TB is in turn equal to 1,024 gigabyte (GB). In other words, Korean people used 157.92 million GB of data through smartphones last year.
Of this, Koreans used 90.9 PB for Internet surfing, or 60.3 percent of the total data usage volume. They used 28.6-PB data for games and applications and 24.4 PB for watching videos.
Strategy Analytics predicted that the annual data volume that Korean people will use through smartphones this year will reach 231.5 PB, up 53.7 percent from a year ago. More than half of the volume or 118 PB will be used for Internet surfing.
The company, however, expected that Koreans will use more data for watching videos rather than Internet surfing from next year. It predicts that the annual data usage volume may reach 354.1 PB in 2014. Of the total, 163.7 PB will be used for video watching.
