What would be the true nature of the IT paradigm ten years from now Given the fast-changing development of IT technologies, it may be more or less unwarranted to clearly state what it is. However, I am of the view that an era of intelligent space will arrive upon us. Most of the technologies that have revolutionized our daily lives since the beginning of the 21st century have been progressing forward through the processes of centralization, dissemination, and networking.

Let's look into the transportation field for instance. The centrally managed transportation system of railways has naturally been grafted onto our life through the multifaceted transportation system centered on roads and automobiles. And then, the system has been transformed into a system of networks grafted together using information technologies such as ITS.

If so, then, what will the transportation system be like following the network system I believe that we will probably see a transportation system comprised of advanced safety vehicles that protect the lives of passengers and, ultimately, IT vehicles of intelligent space that allow automatic driving based on the convergence of sensor technologies by utilizing every sort of information about the surroundings. Such a progression becomes all the more clear in the world of computers. The computerized system of today has evolved from an intensively managed mainframe to a decentralized system of mini computers and work stations, and then PCs all over the world became connected in a network through their encounter with the Internet.

The IT of the future will transform our living space into a Smart Environment as it will be built in with a variety of computing elements in every corner of the real world. For example, the Ambient Intelligence, an environment where intelligence technologies surround our living space in a calm manner, can be said to be the IT paradigm of the future.

In other words, the IT paradigm of intelligence is also a world of Cognitive Spatial Communications. The IT to this day has been different from a sort of a cognitive function that includes touching, feeling and perceiving. But, due to the recent development of information technologies, we are gradually narrowing the intricate gap that has existed between humans . with logic and feelings . and technology.

Dispersed in a real environment, ultra small, sensor-chip-mounted automatic computers recognize necessary circumstances on their own and without human mediation like punching a keyboard. The essence of the IT world will be changed from one that has the characteristic of linking IT according to the will of humans to one that of linked IT. The role of IT that surrounds us like the air is to provide more pleasant and safe services of intelligent space.

The Ambient Intelligence Project, which is pushed on by the EU, has the aim to construct a second environment for survival as an optimum intelligence space. Here, the purpose is to recreate the ordinary living space into a more pleasant and safe space for humans through the medium of technology.

Smart devices with ID tags and communication and processing functions are deployed to all things in the space and the environment. Also, steps need to be taken so that users can receive wanted services through ceaseless interactions among these elements and without any need to be concerned about devices or technologies. This in effect can be called IT that is invisible to the naked eye.

During the past ten years, IT services of our nation have become increasingly diverse, and IT terminals became more convenient and highly functional owing to both the construction of a highly-advanced information superhighway for wired and wireless networks and the undertaking of a computer network utilizing the Internet Protocol standard. But, the IT audiovisual paradigm based on speed and functionality has entered into a mature stage. Therefore, advanced countries have already been launching architecture projects for a future network that creates new concepts and values, rather than that which simply extends existing IT technologies.

This can be interpreted as a strategic move to overcome the tasks and limits of the present day Internet deep down and at the same time take an initiative in a new era of an IT paradigm that would bring about service innovations facilitating the free selection of speed, quality, and security.

The IT today is advancing into a new era of intelligent space that blends humans with objects and the environment. In order for the nation to be reborn as a strong, intelligence- based power in the 21st century it is urgently needed to not only merge the technologies including biotechnology and nanotechnology but also seek research and human resources development in ultra domains that encompass human and social sciences from a long-term perspective.
