Seoul, Korea - KT is going to be the only telecommunications service provider that would be participating in the ‘Smart City’ development project to be launched by Lyon, France. Out of the four enormous projects, the local telecommunications company is going to be involved with a railway station renewal project worth KRW 1.5 trillion, which is the biggest one the company has ever joined abroad.
Kim Hong-jin, the president of KT G&E division, and the mayor of the French city signed a letter of intent (LOI) at KT’s office in Seoul on July 19.
Lyon is the second largest city after Paris and boasts a 2,000-year-old history. ‘Part-Dieu’, at which TSV stops by, is the central station of the city. There are about 500,000 people coming in and going out and more than 40,000 people reside around the station.
The French city is planning to develop the station and its neighboring areas into a comprehensive center where industries and offices are combined just like COEX in Seoul. KT is expected to provide various information and communication technologies and solutions including Smart Grid, wireless network, mobile commerce and Smart information system and others for the redevelopment project.
Meanwhile, the project in which 30 companies including KT are participating is scheduled to be implemented for 10 years from 2015 to 2024.

KT가 프랑스 도시 리옹(Lyon)시의 `스마트 도시` 개발 계획에 유일한 통신사업자로 참여하기로 했다. 총 4개의 거대 프로젝트 중 1조5000억원 규모의 철도역 재개발 사업에 참여한다. KT의 선진국 시장 진출 사례 중 가장 큰 규모다.
김홍진 KT G&E부문 사장과 제라드 클롱 리옹 시장은 지난 19일 서울 광화문 KT 사옥에서 투자의향서(LOI)를 체결했다.
리옹시는 프랑스에서 파리 다음으로 인구가 많은 제2의 도시이면서, 2000년의 장구한 역사를 자랑하는 유서 깊은 곳이기도 하다. `파르-디유(Part-Dieu)`역은 고속철도 떼제베(TSV)가 정차하는 리옹 중심 역이다. 인근 일일 유동인구만 50만명, 상주인 4만여명이 넘는다.
시는 파르-디유 역과 주변 지역을 우리나라 서울의 코엑스와 같은 종합 상업·업무지구로 재개발할 계획이다. KT는 이 재개발 프로젝트에 스마트그리드·무선 네트워크·모바일 커머스·스마트 안내 시스템 등 다양한 정보통신기술(ICT)과 솔루션을 공급할 전망이다.
KT를 포함해 30여개 기업이 참여하는 이 프로젝트는 오는 2015년부터 2024년까지 10년간 진행된다. 차동석 KT 상무는 “파르디유 철도역 리노베이션 사업은 리옹시가 추진하는 대도시권 전략의 첫 번째 주요 프로젝트로 굉장히 중요하다”며 “단순한 역사 현대화가 아니라 주변 도심공간과 환경을 완전히 새롭게 디자인하는 작업이며, KT는 지금까지 쌓아 온 ICT 역량을 이용해 서비스를 더욱 편리하게 향상시키는 역할을 맡게 될 것”이라고 말했다.
한편 KT는 인도네시아 족자카르타에 이러닝 센터를 개소하고 현지 교육 격차 해소를 위해 다양한 무상교육 프로그램을 추진한다고 밝혔다. 개소식에는 인도네시아 족자카르타의 위로네고로 왕자와 주정부 교육부·정보통신부 장관 등이 참석했다. 최재근 KT CSV단 전무는 “이러닝센터가 현지 학생들의 교육 기회를 확대하고 새로운 꿈을 갖는 터전이 되길 바란다”고 말했다.
