SEOUL, KOREA - As Google’s next generation reference Smart Pad, ‘Nexus 7’, is believed to be launched sooner or later, many are paying attention to when it would be released to the local market. Whether the new Smart Pad would make up for low sales made by its predecessor as it was belatedly introduced and insufficient in supply is going to be watched with keen interest.
According to the relevant industry and the foreign press on July 22, the 2nd generation ‘Nexus 7’ would be released within this week. Google has sent invitations to foreign media, saying it would hold ‘a media event’ on July 24. Even if details are not mentioned on the invitation, ‘Nexus 7’ and ‘Android 4.3’ are expected to be introduced at the event.
The new generation ‘Nexus 7’ already passed the authentication processes of the Federal Communications Commission last month. As ASUS K008 (designated for Wi-Fi) and K009 (supporting LTE) gained radio wave certificates from the National Radio Research Agency on July 3 and 10, Google’s new reference Smart Pad is believed to be launched in no time.
The new ‘Nexus 7’ is known to be equipped with a 7-inch Full HD display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor and a 4,000mAh battery. As a reference product, the 2nd generation ‘Nexus 7’ is expected to gain popularity since it would be quickly undated and have an affordable price for its outstanding performance.

구글의 레퍼런스 스마트패드 2세대 `넥서스7`이 조만간 출시될 것으로 알려지면서, 국내 출시일정에 관심이 쏠리고 있다. 전작인 넥서스7이 국내 시장에 한발 늦게 출시되고 물량도 부족하면서 판매가 기대에 못 미쳤던 아쉬움을 만회할지 주목된다.
22일 관련업계와 외신에 따르면 2세대 넥서스7이 이르면 이번 주 출시될 것으로 예상된다. 구글은 해외 언론을 대상으로 오는 24일 `미디어 이벤트`를 개최한다는 안내장을 보냈다. 안내장에 행사 내용을 밝히지 않았지만, 넥서스7과 안드로이드 4.3 등이 발표될 것이란 전망이 나온다.
앞서 2세대 넥서스7은 지난달 미국 연방통신위원회(FCC) 인증을 통과했다. 국내에서도 지난 3일과 10일 아수스 K008(와이파이 전용), K009(LTE 지원)이 국립전파연구원 전파인증을 통과하면서 출시가 다가온 것으로 분석된다.
2세대 넥서스7은 7인치 풀HD 디스플레이에 퀄컴 스냅드래곤S4 프로 프로세서를 탑재하고 4GB 램, 4000mAh 배터리 등을 갖춘 것으로 알려졌다. 레퍼런스 제품이어서 업데이트가 빠르고 성능에 비해 가격도 저렴할 것으로 예상돼 인기가 예상된다.
다만 지난해 출시했던 1세대 넥서스7이 해외에서는 물량이 부족할 정도로 인기를 끌었지만, 국내에서는 기대보다 부진했던 상황이 반복되지 않을지가 관심사다. 당시 해외에는 6월에 출시했지만, 국내에는 9월에야 판매가 시작됐다. 뒤늦은 출시로 관심도가 낮아졌다. 또 구글플레이에서 직접 판매는 올해 4월에야 시작됐다.
결국 2세대 넥서스7 국내 출시와 해외 출시 일정의 차이를 얼마나 줄이느냐가 핵심이다.
구글 관계자는 “아직은 새로운 넥서스7과 관련해 밝힐 수 있는 것이 없다”고 말했다.
