Seoul, Korea - City gas is expected to be used by putting the plug into the outlet as if we do to use electricity.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced on July 24 that it would revise relevant enforcement regulations and make them public as of July 25 in order to address urban gas issues that negatively affect the convenient use by people in general and corporate activities.
The revised regulations will create a legal basis upon which urban gas pipes that were supposed to be installed externally can be placed inside a building or embedded into the wall. The Ministry has also set a norm so as to allow gas pipes to be buried in the pipe duct and to install a multifunctional gas safety meter that prevents gas leakage.
Based on the new regulations, an electric-socket-type gas outlet can be installed on the wall or the floor of each house. And in this way, gas-based home appliances such as
boilers, heaters and cooking devices can be used by plugging them in and out of the outlet.
Such a simple gas socket that can be now installed inside a house would improve the convenience for people, prevent theft and other crimes that use exposed pipes and improve the aesthetic aspect of a building.

도시가스도 전기처럼 콘센트에 꽂아 사용할 수 있게 될 전망이다.
산업통상자원부는 도시가스 사용에 따른 국민편의와 기업활동에 불편을 주는 고충을 해소하고자 이 같은 내용을 골자로 하는 `도시가스사업법 시행규칙`을 25일자로 개정·공포한다고 24일 밝혔다.개정된 시행규칙은 외부에 노출된 상태로 설치하는 것을 원칙으로 했던 도시가스 배관을 건축물 내부나 벽체에 매립할 근거를 마련했다. 피트·파이프 덕트에 배관을 안전하게 설치할 수 있도록 기준을 정해 배관 매몰 설치를 허용하고 가스 누출 시 자동으로 가스공급을 차단하는 다기능 가스안전 계량기를 설치토록 했다.
이에 따라 각 가정의 내부 벽면 또는 바닥에 전기 콘센트와 유사한 콘센트형 가스기기 접속기를 설치할 수 있다. 간단히 꽂았다 뺐다 하는 방식으로 보일러, 난방기, 조리기기 등 가스기기를 사용할 수 있다.
조웅환 산업부 에너지안전과장은 “현재는 이사 때마다 도시가스사를 불러 가스배관 막음막 공사를 해왔으나 앞으로는 간단한 가스 콘센트를 설치할 수 있어 주민 불편이 크게 해소될 것”이라고 말했다.
여기에 외부 노출 배관이 사라져 배관을 이용한 절도 등 범죄 예방 효과가 기대되고 건축물 미관도 크게 개선된다.
가스 계량기도 주택 내부가 아닌 외부에 설치하도록 유도해 외부 검침이 가능하도록 했다. 이 밖에 실내에서 공기를 흡입해 연소된 폐가스를 실내로 배출하게 설계된 개방형 온수기는 이제 설치할 수 없게 된다.
산업부는 규칙 개정에 따른 후속조치로 상세기준과 통합고시를 8월 말까지 마련할 예정이다.
