Seoul, Korea - Korea National Oil Corporation (KNOC) is to work with Clunix, a Korean cloud computing company, to build the 'Integrated Oil Development IT Resource Management System' to enhance the exploration efficiency and reduce investment cost.
According to the industry on the 24th, Clunix, an expert of cloud computing and super-computing, was selected by KNOC as the provider of IT resource management system hardware and solution. KNOC plans to complete the implementation of the system by the end of this year.
This project's aim is to integrate all data, software and hardware related to the oil exploration dispersed over the branch offices of KNOC in and outside Korea into the private cloud. Clunix is to supply its integrated R&D resources cloud solution, RNTier. Clunix said it will use high-performance computers to integrate IT resources and build the basis for cloud service.
When the project is completed, the employees of KNOC will be able to access the data accumulated from all sources in and outside Korea to use the data for the oil exploration.
The system is expected to allow KNOC to analyze the possibility of finding oil more objectively when planning to invest in an exploration project and to reduce the cost of using dedicated software for oil exploration - most of the oil exploration software are from foreign suppliers, and the price tags on some of the well-known solutions, such as Eclipse, Omega 2 and Petrel, are known to be in hundreds of million Won.

석유공사, 클라우드 활용해 `똑똑하고 경제적으로` 석유개발한다
땅 속 깊은 곳에 숨겨진 석유를 찾는 작업은 길고 험난하다. 지질 상황을 분석하는 소프트웨어(SW)는 1개 가격이 2억~3억원에 달할 정도로 비용이 많이 든다. 한국석유공사는 투자비용을 줄이고 탐사 효율을 높이기 위해 국내 중소기업 클루닉스와 함께 `석유개발 IT자원 통합관리시스템` 구축에 나선다.
24일 업계에 따르면 석유공사의 석유개발 IT자원 통합관리시스템 하드웨어(HW)·솔루션 구축 사업자로 클라우드컴퓨팅·슈퍼컴퓨팅 전문업체 클루닉스가 선정됐다. 석유공사는 클루닉스와 함께 연내 시스템 구축을 완료할 방침이다.
이번 사업은 국내외 산재한 석유공사 지사·사무소의 석유개발 관련 각종 데이터와 SW, HW를 프라이빗(사내용) 클라우드 기반으로 통합하는 것이다. 클루닉스는 이번 시스템 구축에 자사 연구개발(R&D) 자원통합 클라우드 솔루션 `아렌티어`를 적용한다. 고성능컴퓨터(HPC)를 사용해 IT자원을 통합하고 클라우드 서비스 기반을 갖춘다.
사업이 완료되면 석유공사 직원들은 국내외에서 축적한 데이터를 어디서든 확인할 수 있다. 각종 데이터를 분석해 의미 있는 정보를 도출, 석유개발 사업에 활용한다는 목표다. 석유개발 사업에 지분 투자를 고려할 경우 성공 가능성을 보다 객관적으로 분석할 수 있을 전망이다.
석유개발 SW를 PC마다 따로 설치하지 않아도 되기 때문에 상당한 비용 절감도 기대된다. 석유개발 SW는 대부분 외산으로, 페트렐·이클립스·오메가2 등 주요 제품은 가격이 수억원대인 것으로 알려졌다.
석유공사 관계자는 “각종 데이터를 전사적으로 공유해 업무에 활용하고 SW 라이선스 비용, 각종 유지보수 비용을 줄일 수 있을 것”이라며 “연말까지 시스템 구축을 완료할 계획”이라고 말했다.
