SEOUL, KOREA- Korea's first energy self-sufficient residential complex will be built in Samcheok, a mid-sized city on the east coast. Daelim Industrial said on August 6 that it is building an apartment complex consuming no electric power and heating gas for its employees. To be completed by March next year, the 13 residential buildings will house 100 families.

It is then complemented with a variety of insulation devices such as high-density double window panes, composite insulation panels, and heat recovery ventilation system. Kim Yang-seop, executive with Daelim Industrial, said, "As the buildings will be erected with a 'zero energy-consumption' design, we expect to save up to 80 million won a year from heating and air-conditioning, with estimated greenhouse emissions reduction of 237 tons."
