SEOUL, KOREA- Samsung Electronics will soon cut the price of its UHD (ultra-high-definition) TVs following cuts in curved OLED TV prices. Kim Hyun-seok, vice president and head of Samsung's visual display business division, said in a press conference on August 14, "Soon there will be an announcement of UHD TV price cut. As the market for UHD TVs is likely to grow exponentially any time soon, it is important that we suggest a price level at which consumers find affordable."
Currently Samsung Electronics is selling its 55- and 65-inch UHD TVs at 6.4 million won and 8.9 million won, respectively. This is almost double the price for regular HD TV models.
With a resolution four times better than full HD TV models, the UHD TV is considered one of the items that will lead the next-generation TV market together with the OLED TV. As the UHD TV has the strong point that the technology is relatively easier to realize, it has ample room for further price cut to make it a mass-market item. Unlike the OLED TV whose only producers are Samsung and LG, there are a multiple number of producers of the UHD TV in Taiwan and China, which makes it hard for Samsung to keep its price high indefinitely.
