With continuing spotlights on breakthroughs in the robotics industry, robot researchers are now going for artificial brains. With Korean scientists' undying efforts to develop an artificial brain system, the robots will soon be able to take appropriate action in situations without an operator having to give instructions. The team in charge of this development process is led by Professor Kim Jong-hwan at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology. Professor Kim announced on Thursday that they are in the process of adding the system into robots.

The brain robot, named Sobot, can sense its surroundings and make decisions before it behaves. The software within robot imitates the thought architecture of human brains. Professor Kim said: "This new innovated software robot is the world's first invention that can make a decision regarding its circumstances." For instance, the robot will charge its battery on its own when it detects its battery is low. Whenever its owner is unavailable, it will stop consuming electricity and turn itself off. The software robot is made up of six components similar to a human brain: internal status, memory, behavior, perception, context awareness, and actuation.

The country's leading telecom operator KT seeks a research partnership to work on software robot architecture together. Professor Kim's next target is to give personality to robot hardware in the future.
