SEOUL, KOREA- Due to a fire at an SK Hynix semiconductor production plant in Wuxi, China, on September 4, DRAM prices rose by a large margin. It also pulled down the share price of SK Hynix while brought up those of Samsung Electronics and Micron Technology.
Taiwan's semiconductor market research firm DRAMeXchange said on the 5th that the spot price of a 2-Gb DRAM for personal computers was US$1.89, up 18.1 percent from the previous day's $1.60. The DRAM spot price had climbed up steadily until the end of June before sliding slightly in July.
As for the fixed price applicable to long-term contracts, market watchers said it may also rise. The fixed price, announced twice a month, has stayed at the same level for two months since July after gaining steadily since late last year.
On the same day, the share price of Samsung Electronics, the world's largest DRAM manufacturer, rose 1.87 percent to 1,365,000 won, ending its decline for two consecutive days. The price of Micron Technology, the global No. 4 in DRAMs, also increased 5.3 percent. In contrast, the No. 2 DRAM maker SK Hynix saw its share price fall 1.75 percent to 28,150 won.
