SEOUL, KOREA- GS EPS, a power generation unit of GS Group, has completed the construction of a No. 3 gas-fired plant in Dangjin, South Chungcheong Province, and gone into full operation. The company said on October 2 that it held a completion ceremony on the same day at Dangjin's Bugok Industrial Zone, with GS Group chairman Huh Chang-soo, vice chairman Suh Kyung-suk, and GS EPS president Lee Wan-kyung in attendance. The combined-cycle power plant cost the company 460 billion won to build.

Chairman Huh said in a speech, "The launch of GS EPS No. 3 plant will help relieve our nation's current electricity shortage problem while contributing to the local community in the form of job creation." The new power plant has a capacity of 415 megawatts, equivalent to electricity sufficient for 450,000 households per hour. With the completion of the No. 3 plant, GS EPS has a total power generation capacity of 1,503 megawatts, including 538 and 550 megawatts from its No. 1 and 2 plants.

The company said the latest plant is one of the most efficient and cleanest power plants in Asia as it employs state-of-the-art gas turbine. Established in 1996 as the nation's first privately owned power generation company, GS EPS runs four power plants including three liquefied natural gas-based ones in Dangjin and one 2.4-megawatt fuel-cell plant. In May this year, it broke the ground for building Asia's largest biomass power plant No. 4 (105.5 megawatt capacity), which is to be completed by 2015.
