DSME to Build 2 State-of-the-art Drillships

SEOUL, KOREA- Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering said on October 15 that it won a 1.32-trillion-won (US$1.24-billion) order to build two drillships for an unidentified Africa-based shipowner.The company said in a regulatory filing that the ships will be delivered by the end of 2015 after being built in the company's Okpo, Geoje Island, dockyard. To be built with its own proprietary designs, the drillships are capable of drilling holes up to 12 kilometers underwater in depths up to 3.6 km.

The ships will be equipped with two drill towers, one for punching holes and the other for assembling drilling pipes. This design, according to company officials, will be able to save work time by more than 25 percent. The company has also improved safety by installing two blowout preventers instead of usual one.

This year to date, Daewoo Shipbuilding has won a total of $11.26-billion orders in merchant ships and offshore plants including six drillships.
