The Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co., jointly with KEPCO E&C, Doosan Heavy Industries, Korea Nuclear Fuel, KEPCO KPS, Samsung C&T, and SK Engineering & Construction, has participated in the bidding by Finland's Industrial Power Corp., or Teollisuuden Voima Oyj, to build a 1.4-million-kilowatt APR 1400-type nuclear power plant. The APR 1400 is the same model as the one built for the United Arab Emirates in 2009, as well as the ones, Shin-Gori Nos. 3 and 4, being built in Gori.
If Korea Hydro succeeds in winning the Finnish project, it will be the first instance in which Korea exports nuclear power plant building technology to Europe. The European market accounts for about 40 percent in the world. A government official said, "If the Korean consortium lands the Finnish deal, it will have more opportunities in East Europe whose governments are turning increasingly toward nuclear power for their energy shortage problems."
