SEOUL, KOREA- Hyundai Glovis, a Hyundai Kia Automotive Group company, has revealed a blueprint to become a world-class shipper relying less on the parent company's business but much more on third-party customers. To that end, the company will quadruple its ocean shipping sales to 8.2 trillion won by 2020 while increasing the share of bulk business carry grain and coal to 65 percent from the current 35 percent.
Hyundai Glovis said this on October 22 in a press conference announcing its 2020 vision for the ocean shipping business. The core part of the vision was that it would increase its sales revenue from the 2-trillion-won level to more than 8 trillion won in 2020. In addition, it will shift its business focus away from pure car/truck carrying toward bulk goods transportation.
Kim Jin-ok, Hyundai Glovis executive in charge of ocean shipping business, said, "As for the auto-carrying business, we are expanding business transactions with third-party car makers such as GM and Toyota. But our strategic focus will be on the bulk goods carrying business."
As part of implementing the strategy, the company will adjust the number of car/truck carriers and bulk carriers from the current 50 and 20 to 100 and 400, respectively, by 2020.
