Daegu City has selected the IT industry, especially the mobilerelated industry as the strategic industry of the region.

It has been concentrating all its capabilities in order to make the leap as a mobile hub city that leads the global market through the development of its R&D capabilities and technologies of small and medium-sized enterprises within the region, new product development, domestic and overseas marketing, the cultivation of professional manpower and tailormade support for corporations.

MOBEX 2007 will not be a simple exhibition. In order to contribute to the development of the mobile industry of the region, the efforts have been made to induce specialized corporations in consideration of links and cooperation among corporations, with the subjects being mobile-related specialized enterprises. Currently, Daegu City has been concentrating on the inducement of visitors, including buyers. Especially, it is planned that immediately before the event active participation by residents of the region will be induced through PR aimed at the general public, including radio, banners and other media.

The first event was held last year from September 14 to 16. A total of 56 domestic and foreign enterprises participated. The results of the total consultation amount of 27 billion won (US$29 million) and a total contract amount of 2.3 billion won (US$2.48 million) were achieved. Especially, the first international mobile exhibition to be held in the region proved to be an opportunity for publicizing the potential in the mobile industry that Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk Province have.

Also, it is planned that efforts will be made to develop the event into an international specialized exhibition for the development of the mobile industry, which is a specialized industry of the Daegu Gyeongsangbuk region. And it is planned that continuous efforts will be made so that the event becomes a substantial international event that provides material help to the mobile industry of the region especially by listening to the diverse opinions of experts and the industry after the event.

The IT industry : Daegu's strategic industry

In the region, an international mobile test bed has been constructed centered on the Mobile Technology Commercial Center (MTCC) in Daegu. Hence, it is highly expected that it will greatly help small and medium-sized enterprises in the region, including product development and the shortening of the development schedule.

In addition, in December 2006 Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk jointly induced the Mobile Field Test-bed (MFT) of the Ministry of Information and Communication to Gumi. It is anticipated that this will bring about improvement of the competitiveness of the mobile enterprises in the region and a new innovation of the mobile industry of Korea.

Park Kwang-kil, director general of New Technologies and Industries Bureau of Daegu City, said: "In the southeastern region, which includes Gumi, Daegu, and Masan, mobile-related R&D, tests, production, certification and marketing are supported through one-stop services. Hence, the construction of a world-class mobile industry cluster through the accumulation of corporations is possible."

Currently, the construction of the mobile test bed of the region includes the Mobile Technology Commercial Center (MTCC), Daegu Techno Park, Daegu Digital Industry Promotion Agency (DIP), and Gumi City.

The region's mobile industry has highclass manpower from by Kyungpook National University and others of the like. It has excellent infrastructure, such as the Mobile Technology Commercial Center (MTCC). There are the world-class mobile terminal manufacturing corporations Samsung Electronics, in Gumi, and Nokia TMC, in Masan, nearby Daegu. About 500 related small and medium-sized enterprises are concentrated in Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk Province in order to deliver goods and for cooperative development.

The place of which the mobile industry is specialized and developed based on such technological capabilities is the Daegu Gyeongsangbuk region.

Director General Park has high expectations that the region will indeed become a new land of opportunity in which a mutually developmental business model is created through active cooperation and exchanges among the regional corporations and in which corporate profits can be maximized.

Mutually organic cooperation system between Daegu & Gyeongsangbuk-do

As a result of its research paper called The Actual State of the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Mobile Industry for 2006, the Mobile Technology Commercial Center (MTCC) stated that the mobile industry of the region has been rapidly growing and has secured technological competitiveness, thereby contributing to the creation of high value-added products and the invigoration of the regional economy.

Also, Daegu City has been making diverse efforts for invigorating the mobile industry through global marketing, the formation of a mobile integrated complex, and the inducement of corporations in order to construct a mutually organic cooperation system between Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk and to construct a mobile industry cluster.

Park said: "It is planned to pursue the construction of a mobile cluster that connects Gumi, Daegu, Masan and Changwon. In the future, it will be possible to see a Daegu- Gyeongsangbuk that has been changed into an international region specializing in the mobile industry."

The exhibition this time will display software solution products including vector graphic solutions, mobile web browsers, Mobile WiMAX solutions and security tracing solutions of portable terminals. It will display mobile convergence products, including the previously existent portable multimedia players (PMPs) and navigation systems with GPS. It will also display idea products related to the BlueTooth Headset and the FM transmitter. In addition, the exhibition will display Mobile WiMAX and 3G development equipment.

In particular, it is anticipated that the exhibition this time will show the characteristic of a more diverse and professional business exhibition through the participation of part products, including Flexible Printed Circuit (FPC) for LCD's, proactive IC components and external cases for terminals.
