SEOUL, KOREA - LG Electronics released 6 inch ‘G Flex’ in Yeouido Bldg., Seoul on 4th.
A curved-screen smartphone, G Flex, is an attack against ‘Galaxy Round’ and LG's will of counterattack on the market in the fourth quarter.
A product planning team leader of MC(Mobile Communications) operation department for LG, Kwon Bong-seok, has expressed that G Flex will be released both Korea and other overseas countries and stated “I cannot make mention of a specific communication carrier but it is under consultation. We will begin selling in U.S., Europe and other countries soon.”
Also, he added, “It is hard to tell sales goals but a mass production system of LG curved-display has been developed with large scale.” It is a denial of the views that G Flex is a trial product to see how customers respond on curved-screens. Also, it is a different step with Samsung Electronics who released ‘Galaxy Round’ via only SK telecom.
G Flex is curved from top to bottom, therefore speakers and microphones slightly up to each other. G Flex has a distinctly different appearance against Samsung ‘Galaxy Round’ which is curved from right to left as tiles. G Flex weighs 177g heavier than Galaxy Round (154g) and is 7.9mm thick.
For users who think display's pixel is important for smartphones, a standard HD (1280x720) and 245ppi pixel per an inch are not that high quality specification because a standard this year is a full HD, whereas Galaxy Round is a full HD and has 386ppi. Also, G Flex has flexible OLED screen display, and LG is still developing mass production technology of full HD compact OLED.
The main advantage is the curved battery. If it is non-curved batteries, the size should be reduced and the capacity also should be reduced. That is the reason a flat battery of Galaxy Round has only 2800mAh capacity. However, G Flex battery is integral with the phone and Galaxy Round battery can be separated.
The question is, the price as much as performance of products. Regarding to profitability, the expected price of G Flex is high, but its price remains unknown even LG is going to release G Flex on 12th.
Executive director Kwon said at the end of the announcement of G Flex, “We have not done well in third quarter because of rushed marketing costs at that time, but it will be very different in the fourth quarter. We are thoroughly preparing for success in G Flex.”
