Come to Korea to whip up fusion Korean food

SEOUL, KOREA - Foreigners who love Korean foods are coming to Seoul. Seoul metropolitan government will host ‘2013 Seoul My New Recipe’ on Nov, 8 (Fri), and ten foreigners from seven countries who will participate in the competition, are scheduled to stay Korea for five days from Nov, 5 (Fri) to 9 (sat)

For five weeks from Aug. 22 to Sep. 25, people from around the world who want to join the event applied on the YouTube channel of Seoul and Youku channel. As a result, 117 video clips from 23 countries were uploaded.

The fact that people from 23 countries in Southeast Asia, Europe, Middle East as well as the U.S, China and Japan uploaded 117 video clips of their cooking a variety of Korean fusion food demonstrates the global popularity of Korean food.

As of Oct. 4th, the last day of counting hits, the total number of clicks on 117 video clips stood at 85,953. Currently, the number has exceeded 99,000 hits, implying that the attention on fusion Korean food will continue.

Seoul metropolitan government appointed renowned fusion Korean food chefs and Korean food experts as members of judging committee to deliberate the preliminary round. All five teams consisted of 10 foreigners living in Canada, Morocco, the U.S, Vietnam, Germany, Malaysia, and China, grabbed a ticket to Seoul and will participate in the Seoul gourmet tour as well as the final round of the competition.

Notably, two out of five teams will vie in the competition consist of team members of different nationalities. The participants of various countries showed a variety of fusion Korean foods including, Caribbean Style seasoned-Chicken, (Canada), Morocco Style Bibimbab,(Morocco, the U.S), Bulgogi Spring Roll (Vietnam,Germany), Samgyetang (Malaysia), and Beef wrapped in sesame leaf (China).

The Canada team added the Caribbean Style, which is a concoction of various cultures to the Korean seasoned chicken, and one Vietnamese who resides in Germany pleasantly surprised the judges with their unique Bulgogi Spring roll made of Korean pepper paste, peanut butter, and miso. Also, the Morocco team showed off one of a kind fusion dish, Morocco Style Bibimbob, without using pepper paste. In addition, the Malaysian team whipped up unique Samgyetang, stewing ginseng with corns. Chinese team served ‘Beef wrapped in sesame leaf’, adding cabbage Kimchi and bean sprouts.

On Nov, 8 (Fri), at Taepyunghall, which is on the 2nd basement floor of Citizens' Hall, the Final Round will be held. The participants will cook two dishes on the spot, one they showed off in the video clip and the other designated by the host, which will be unveiled on the very day of the final contest. Based on the two dishes, the final winner team will be decided.

For two hours from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00a.m, the contest will be held on a grand scale befittingly for its title ‘2013 Global Seoul Fusion Korean Food Contest; Seoul My New Recipe’, offering a great chance to have a good time for participants and audiences alike with its various programs. The contest is expected to promote the globalization of Korean food as well.

The contest is cosponsored by Asiana Airlines and Yido,a pottery company. The city government will air the events including both the online video contest and the offline event on YouTube Channel of Seoul and Youku channel. Participants will also post their gourmet tour and the contest on their SNS, promoting Seoul and Korean food online.
