SEOUL, KOREA - Samsung Engineering Co. said on February 17 that it won an US$800-million order to engage in the Algeria Timimoun Field Development project awarded by Groupement Timimoun (GTIM), a joint venture between Sonatrach of Algeria (51.0%), Total of France (37.75%), and Cepsa of Spain (11.25%).

The project calls for developing a natural gas field located 800 kilometers southwest of Algiers, the Algerian capital. Samsung Engineering will be responsible for engineering, procurement, construction and pre-commissioning on a lump-sum turn-key basis to build a 180-kilometer pipeline and a central processing facility (CPF) with a capacity of 177 million cu ft per day (MMSCFD).

Samsung Engineering president Park Jung-heum said, "The Timimoun project involves developing the first-ever natural gas field in the Sahara Desert. We will do our best to make the project successful based on our capabilities in safety management."

With the latest project, Samsung Engineering will be able to cement its relationship with Sonatrach, the Algerian state-run oil company and Africa's largest, that it began in 2009 when it took a $2.6-billion Skikda refinery plant for the petroleum company. A Samsung Engineering official said, "As our outstanding performance with the Skikda plant was instrumental in leading the current project, we expect more orders to come in the future in Algeria."
