SEOUL, KOREA - Hyundai Heavy Industries succeeded in building the LNG floating storage regasification unit (FSRU) for the first time in the world. LNG-FSRU is often called an LNG base station at sea.
On February 19, the Korean shipyard held a naming ceremony for a 170,000-cubic-meter LNG-FSRU, attended by Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite, who has been on a visit to Korea, and Mr. Leif Hoegh, vice chairman of Hoegh LNG, which placed the order.
The LNG-FSRU is 294 meters long, 46 meters wide and 26 meters deep, with a capacity of storing and supplying 70,000 tons of gas. The LNG-FSRU will be installed at the coast of Lithuania.
The Lithuanian President Grybauskaite joined as the sponsor of the naming ceremony and named it “Independence.”
A Hyundai Heavy Industries official said, “We expect the successfully completed LNG-FSRU to play a meaningful role in supplying LNG for Lithuania. We’d like to extend close cooperation with respect to the establishment of energy infrastructure in Lithuania.”
After two years of R&D, the Korean shipyard developed independent LNG-FSRU design capabilities. The company won orders for a total of four LNG-FSRUs from Hoegh LNG, including two ordered in June 2011.
