SK Telecom Launches Smart Green Button to Enhance the Safety of the Vulnerable

SEOUL, KOREA - SK Telecom (NYSE:SKM) today announced the commercial launch of ‘Smart Green Button,’ an innovative Bluetooth-based appcessory that allows users to issue emergency calls and send location information to pre-designated guardians by simply pushing a button.

SK Telecom has been focusing on developing new ways of enhancing customer’s convenience and benefits through expanded use of smartphones that has become an integral part of people’s daily lives. Against this backdrop, the company joined hands with Child Fund Korea to promote a powerful appcessory that can increase the safety of children, women and the vulnerable.

First showcased at Mobile World Congress 2014 held last month in Barcelona, Spain, Smart Green Button was well received by visitors and industry related professionals as it suggests a new way of protecting people (especially children and women) against possible crime and violence.

Smart Green Button is a small button-shaped, battery-powered product that is designed to communicate with the Smart Green Button application on the user’s smartphone via Bluetooth technology.

When the user simply pushes the button, it automatically dials  to  pre-defined phone number (of guardians) and enables the call receiver to immediately determine the situation the user is in by listening to the sound or voices delivered through the smartphones. Any sound that occurs during the situation will be recorded in the server. While listening to the situation, the receiver can call 112(National Police Call Center) by pressing the ‘*’ or ‘#’ button and activate three-way calling between the user, call receiver and the police.

Besides dialing the numbers of pre-designated guardians, Smart Green Button, once pushed by the user, also sends location information of the user to the guardians. The user’s location appears on the map supported by the Smart Green Button application developed for and installed in the guardians’ smartphones.

Smart Green Button vibrates three times when the emergency call is successfully connected to the guardian and again three times when the guardian reports the situation to the police (112) so as to assure the user that the emergency call has been successfully made.

Subscribers of all three Korean mobile carriers using Android-base smartphones will be able to use Smart Green Button by paying a monthly charge KRW 1,500 after purchasing the product at KRW 35,000 available from today at 3,000 authorized retail stores of SK Telecom nationwide.
