The GSM Association today presented its latest statistics that demonstrate how HSPA and HSPA+ are fast becoming the de-facto global Mobile Broadband technologies and lead the way in bridging the digital divide on June 1st.

There are 245 commercially available HSPA networks supporting more than 125 million live connections in 107 countries. A further 65 HSPA networks are either being deployed, in trial or planned with an average of four million Mobile Broadband connections being added globally on a monthly basis.

The global deployment of HSPA technology continues to thrive. There are more than 1,380 HSPA enabled devices offered by 134 different suppliers worldwide, creating an ecosystem that is driving economies of scale that will see cost savings passed on to operators and ultimately the subscribers themselves.

"HSPA Mobile Broadband roll-out is focused on the development of a ubiquitous infrastructure and the proliferation of devices that will connect the world's population to the internet," said Michael O'Hara, CMO at the GSMA. "HSPA and HSPA+ have generated strong momentum which, will be sustained through the future proliferation of LTE technology."

"WiMAX is a complimentary technology to HSPA and will play a niche role," continued O'Hara. "HSPA and HSPA+ have the global pedigree and supporting ecosystem to bring Internet coverage to the masses, creating economies of scale to deliver an affordable global broadband solution."

*The statistics for global Mobile Broadband connections in this media alert are taken from Wireless Intelligence and are true as of Thursday, 28th May 2009.
