The Public Procurement Service (PPS) will introduce a radio frequency identification (RFID) product code system this year to all government agencies for the efficient management of their office supplies and equipment one year ahead of the original schedule.
The PPS plans to finish the project by December after selecting a program provider by June and with a budget of W18 billion (US$14.5 million). Once completed, the project will create more than 2,810 new jobs and the new product code management system will save the government a total of W75.2 billion (US$60.6 million).
If the system is built, RFID tags will be put on about 8.7 million pieces of government office supplies and equipment this year. All processes of acquisition, storage, inventory and disposal of government office supplies and equipment will be electronically handled through a ubiquitous sensor network RFID (USN/RFID) module system. The new system is expected to prevent the unnecessary waste of government money, which has been in some cases overspent due to lack of accurate inventory services.
The new system will use an intelligent and wireless USN/RFID module system. It consists of electronic tags, readers, middleware, and an applied service platform.
The new system will also galvanize the resource recycling and waste treatment industry, as it will be possible to make an inventory of government office supplies and equipment in real time. PPS will seek revision of relevant law in order to boost the RFID industry as well.
