SEOUL, KOREA - Hyundai Motor will recall 120,000 Tucson ix crossover utility vehicles sold in Korea for a defect in the air bag assembly. This is the same problem that happened in the United States for which the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ordered the car maker to remedy the problem after discovering that the air bag assembly may come loose from its mounting on the steering wheel.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transportation said on May 19 that it has ordered Hyundai Motor to recall 122,561 Tucson ix cars manufactured between January 1, 2011 and December 26, 2013. As for the reasons for the recall, a ministry official said that the improper tightening of the horn cover on the steering wheel may lead to detachment of the cover on impact, which may also affect airbag performance.

Earlier the company decided to recall 140,000 Tucsons assembled in the Ulsan plant and shipped to the United States for defects in the bolts attaching the driver's air bag module to the steering wheel. The company plans to inspect and tighten the bolts free of charge from May 20 to those cars visiting any of its service centers.
