SEOUL, KOREA - The sales gap between Ssangyong Motor and Renault Samsung Motors, the No. 4 and 5 players among Korea’s car makers, are narrowing. According to industry sources on May 21, Renault Samsung is about to overtake Ssangyong Motor thanks to its recent aggressive marketing.
For the January-April period of this year, Ssangyong Motor sold 22,807 units in the domestic market, about 1,700 units higher than Renault Samsung’s 21,062. Ssangyong Motor stayed ahead of Renault in the first quarter of this year. Ssangyong, however, was overtaken by Renault in April when the former sold 6,010 and the latter 6,153.
Ssangyong Motor escaped from the bottom rank last year, first since 2000. However, as Renault Samsung recently stepped up marketing efforts, it will likely to be a tough fight for Ssangyong Motor to sustain its No. 4 position.
Renault Samsung is enjoying an increase in overall domestic sales along with the hike in demand for QM3 and QM5 which it imports and sells here.
