SEOUL, KOREA - Renault Samsung announced that it will start exporting SM3 to Malaysia on a semi-knockdown basis. SM3 will be sold in Malaysia under the brand of Renault Fluence.
The car maker announced on May 23 that Tan Chong Motors Holdings, which owns exclusive sales rights for Renault/Nissan brands in Malaysia, will be responsible for local production and sales of Renault Fluence.
After starting exports of 1,000 units per year, Renault Samsung plans to expand the annual export volume steadily. With this deal, Renault Samsung could gain a sales and production base in Southeast Asia.
Renault Group plans to expand the lineup of export models on a step-by-step basis, starting from compact-sized sedans which have high popularity in Southeast Asia. Renault Group also plans to increase the number of local dealers up to 25 by 2016.
A group official said, “This export is the first step we took to develop ourselves into the second largest European auto maker in Malaysia.”
