At Global Electric Power Tech 2009, the Korea Electric Power Data Network (KDN) announced that it is focusing on smart grid technology which is a big part of the green growth policy under the Lee Myung-bak administration. The electric power IT researchers are currently working on 15 main problems related to smart grid system in power transmission and transformers. KDN is planning to make a world-class smart grid technology, especially in electric equipment monitoring systems, power distribution equipment error monitoring systems, and sales infrastructure systems for transmission and transformers.
On the other hand, the development of important smart grid-related systems such as the intelligent optical transmission system, remote monitoring system, smart energy system, and real-time area power monitoring system, is completed by KDS. These systems can be used in the current electric power industry market, and the full potential will be reached as the smart grid system is further developed.
Caught On Sight
The show floor clearly suggested that KDN has become a leader in the IT field of the electric power industry. By showcasing everything from Electric Automatic Systems (K-EMS), Power Transmission and Transformer Automatic Systems (SCADA), Automatic Power Distribution Systems (DAS), and Remote Monitoring Systems, KDN established a global recognition as a smart grid contributor. From electricity generators to consumers, KDN is greatly involved in the whole process. KDN is considered as one of the best company to be the developer of smart grid technology.

"What we are greatly promoting here at the show is the Multi-function FRTU for Distributed Agent Protection System and Intelligent FRTU for the National Power IT Project. As the advancement of all areas in society, it is necessary to provide stable and high quality electric power. By using overhead switches, re-closers, under-ground circuit switches, and breakers, our system serves multiple functions including high precision measurement, prevention diagnosis, power quality management, and protection coordination," said assistant manager Oh Sung-yun.
The next generation Feeder Remote Remote Terminal units (FRTU) of KDN automatically separate the fault section through real time 1:1 communication based on high-speed communication networks with the built-in protection algorithm in the FRTU.
Current Status Learned at the Show Floor
Since KDN is chosen as a business partner by the 4th Certified e-Document Authority, the company is looking for various businesses in the field. Last year, KDN purchased new Linux OS servers and storage systems from HP, Sun, Compaq, and Hitachi. Also, a new computer center and back-up center were established in Seocho-dong in Seoul and Inchon respectively.
Based on the new technology system, KDS is putting more efforts in sales and marketing to electric power companies including KEPCO. The electric document standardization and law revision are currently under way. As people recognize the importance of electronic document storage, the business is expected to grow under higher demand.
Outlook of 2009 and the Near Future
This year, KDN is advertising and marketing an e-Document system, electronic bidding system, and other related systems as the main business as a Certified e-Document Authority. Also, additional services will be developed to expand the business in the future. The Electronic Document Distribution Center can distribute documents and forms between electric power companies and registered business partners. The system made it possible to issue and request tax bills over the Internet, and it is expected to be KDN's profit generating model in the future. KDN is planning to make US$500 million in sales from the Certified e-Document storage business, and expecting to reach US$1 billion in 2010 and US$2 billion sales in 2011.
