Michael Jackson

They called him the King of Pop, but it was perhaps only in death that the global spread of his popularity became truly obvious. Interest in Michael Jackson’s collapse and death yesterday brought a number of sites to a halt, and a number of people reported slow connections, such was the volume of online traffic.

Gossip site TMZ, which first broke the news he’d collapsed, was so flooded that it was down for a while, and another celebrity gossip site from Perez Hilton also crashed. Twitter, which had been more absorbed by the Iran demonstration, came to a halt due to the sheer number of Jackson Tweets. It's been said that at one point yesterday, 15% of all Tweets were Jackson-related.
