Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering has won a US$400-million deal to build four oil tankers for a Greek shipowner. The company said on July 31 that its president Koh Jae-ho met with John Angelicoussis, the chairman of Angelicoussis Group, Greece's largest shipping company, and signed the contract with Maran Tankers Management, an Angelicoussis Group company.
To be delivered by 2016, all the four vessels will be built with eco-friendly designs at the company's Okpo Dockyard in Geoje Island. The shipbuilder has had an intimate relationship with the Greek shipper by building a total of 60 ships since 1994. With the latest contract, DSME has won a total of $5.8 billion in ship orders.
Koh, DSME's president, said, "Angelicoussis Group has long been known to forecast the business cycle of the shipping market precisely. The fact that the group placed an order with us now means the market will recover any time soon."
