SEOUL, KOREA - GM Korea’s production line in Changwon producing small trucks such as the Labo and Damas regained vigor after eight months of suspension. The Labo and Damas, which were introduced first in August 1991, were popular vehicles and had been sold as many as 385,000 units in Korea for 23 years and six months.

They boasted low prices and tax benefits, thereby being called the foot of the working class people and used widely by small vendors. The production of the Labo and Damas, however, was suspended at the end of last year due to their failure in meeting the government’s toughened safety and environmental regulations.

The manufacturer decided to stop the production of these models since it was difficult to maintain profitability if it upgrades them to comply with the government regulations.

Due to requests by a large number of small vendors, the government decided to suspend the enforcement of some environment regulations on these vehicles, clearing the way for GM Korea to resume their production.
