SEOUL, KOREA - After remaining as a future technology for so long, wireless charging is finally blossoming, with the scope of its application expanding toward wearable devices like smart watches and automobiles.Industry experts predict that the wireless charging market would expand to $15 billion by 2020 from $6 billion this year.
Against this backdrop, a handful of Korea’s major companies, including Samsung Electro-Mechanics, LG Innotek, and LS Cable & System, which have thoroughly prepared to establish a clear profile in the wireless charging market, are moving quickly to take an early lead in the budding market.
A variety of wearable devices with wireless charging functions will be displayed at the IFA Berlin 2014 which is scheduled to be held in Berlinnext month.
Among them are LG Electronics’ wearable device G Watch and Motorola smart watches. iWatch, which Apple is known to release in the second half of this year, is also believed to have the wireless charging feature.
