SEOUL, KOREA - Smartphones are showing stronger trends toward bigger screens and higher resolutions.According to market research firm DisplaySearch on September 30, the display panel size of smartphones released in the second quarter of this year worldwide averaged at 4.7 inches, 1 inch larger than 3.7 inches in the first quarter of 2013.
The average display panel size of the smartphones with HD (1280 x 720)-plus resolution is estimated at 5.1 inches, while that of the smartphones with lower-than-HD resolution is 4.4 inches, indicating that larger smartphones have higher resolution.
Along with the progress of the display technology, the high-resolution smartphone market is growing at a rapid pace.
The shipments of higher than full HD (1920 x 1080) smartphone panels stood at 75.61 million units in the second quarter of this year, accounting for 21.5 percent in total shipments of 352.03 million units. This figure is a 2.2-fold increase compared to a year ago.
