SEOUL, KOREA - LG Electronics plans to donate 2,000 smartphones to help prevent Ebola virus which is spreading across Africa. The company announced on October 20 that it decided to donate 2,000 smartphones to the United Nations OCHA (Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs).
The donated smartphones will be used by medical workers in Ebola-affected areas.By using the smartphones, they could have effective communication among themselves or with the headquarters of the OCHA to ensure the proper collection of medical data, the effective monitoring of the progress in situation, and on-time discussions to establish countermeasures.
Medical institutions who are engaged in combating the Ebola epidemic in Africa are known to have difficulty in establishing proper countermeasures and sharing and monitoring the progress of the situation due to shortage of infrastructure, including telecommunications equipment.
