SEOUL, KOREA - Korea has become one of the International Telecommunications Union’s director countries for seven consecutive times.
During the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference held at BEXCO Exhibition & Convention Center in Busanon October 27, Korea gained the second largest votes among Asian countries, behind China, occupying one of the 13 seats assigned for the Asian region. The tenure is from January 2015 to April 2018.
Korea joined the ITU in 1952 during the Korean War and became the director country first in 1989 and, thereafter, has been appointed as director country for seven times in a row.
The ITU board of directors, consisting of 48 countries, is engaged in supervising the ITU’s executive body, while being involved in its operations ranging from budgeting and settlement.
The Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning said that the ITU’s appointment of Korea once again as its director country proves the country’s status as one of the world’s IT superpowers.
