SEOUL, KOREA - Samsung Electronics was overtaken by Xiaomi not only in China’s smartphone market but in the nation’s overall mobile phone market, including conventional mobile phones.
According to U.S. market research firm Strategy Analytics, Xiaomi grabbed a share of 15.4 percent in China’s mobile phone market in the third quarter of this year, higher than Samsung’s 13.5 percent.
In the smartphone segment, Xiaomi had a share of 16.2 percent, higher than Samsung’s 13.3 percent.Considering that Xiaomi is not producing non-smartphone mobile phones, its smartphone sales are larger than the combined sales of Samsung’s smartphones and mobile phones.
A year ago, Xiaomi had a share of merely about 6.4 percent and Samsung 21.6 percent. Over the past one year, Xiaomi achieved remarkable growth.
Samsung’s share in China’s smartphone market has been on a downward trend this year, falling to 19.0 percent in the first quarter, 14.3 percent in the second quarter and 13.3 percent in the third quarter.
