SEOUL, KOREA - Sony Pictures, adistributor of Hollywood movies, decided to withdraw from the Korean marketafter 24 years of operations. Sony Pictures Korea announced on November 12, “Wewill distribute movies in Korea until the end of this year, upon the decisionmade by the U.S. headquarters.”
Accordingly, the warmovie “Fury,” starred by Brad Pitt, which will open on November 20, will be thelast movie Sony Pictures Korea distributes here in Korea.Starting from nextyear, Sony-affiliated movies and animations will be distributed in Korea byUPI.
Sony, which entered theKorean market in 1990s as a Korean branch of Columbia TriStar, established SonyPictures Releasing Walt Disney Studio Korea, a joint venture with Walt Disney,in Korea in 2006.In the meantime, Disney Studio Korea will continue itsdistribution operations in Korea.
