-The darkness of the isolated communist state is in stark contrast with the south of the image in which South Korea is shown bathed in light.

One of the most striking images of the year was taken by astronauts on the ISS, showing North Korea in almost-complete darkness. The darkness of the isolated communist state is in stark contrast with the south of the image in which South Korea is shown bathed in light.

Its capital city, Pyongyang, appears like a small island, despite a population of 3.26 million. According to Nasa, the light emission from Pyongyang is equivalent to the smaller towns in South Korea. Coastlines are often very apparent in night imagery, as shown by South Korea's eastern shoreline. But the coast of North Korea is difficult to detect.

These differences are reflected in per capita power consumption in the two countries, with South Korea at 10,162 kilowatt hours and North Korea at 739 kilowatt hours.
