
One out of two TVs in Korea will be connected with the Internet by 2020. This level will be higher than in the US and the UK.
According to market research firm Digital TV Research on January 22, the number of Internet-connected TV sets will reach 965 million units by 2020 from 339 million units in 2014 and 103 million units in 2010.
The Internet-connected TV sets refer to all kinds of hardware devices, including smart TVs and other devices such as pay TV set-top boxes, game consoles like PlayStation, Blu-ray players and streaming boxes, which enable TVs to be connected with the Internet.
The share of Internet-connected TVs in overall TVs is forecast to rise to 30.4 percent by 2020 from 12.1 percent in 2014 and 4.2 percent in 2010.
By country, such a share in Korea will likely to rise up to 52.7 percent by 2020, followed by the UK with 50.6 percent, Japan with 48.6 percent, and the US with 47 percent.
The number of smart TVs is expected to reach 346 million units by 2020, accounting for more than one third of the total Internet-connected TV sets.
