CTO Cho Si-hang of AhnLab, Inc.
The phrase “united we stand, divided we fall” is one of the most commonly used pep talks Koreans use in a crisis. Perhaps such a cliché is the most simple, yet practical solution to strengthen a defensive line. Without everyone’s involvement, as CTO Cho Si-haeng of AhnLab stated, there will be no true comfort zone in terms of cyber-security within our heart.

The founder of AhnLab is Doctor Ahn Chul-soo, who was originally a medical doctor.  He first invented the vaccine for computer viruses in Korea. Since 1995, AhnLab gave away computer virus vaccines to computer users for seven years. Even in the recent DDoS attack in July, AhnLab provided free vaccines for anyone to take immediate self-defense.

The defense line has come a long way since firewalls. But what good is firewalls, or IPS, or even Unified Threat Management (UTM) defense methods if one’s personal computer at home is hacked by a smooth cyber intruder due to negligence Anyone can be the part of cyber threat in the world we live in today. After all, the USB a career woman uses could be the virus transporter from a computer at work to a computer at home.

“Self awareness, self willpower, and self check-ups must work together with the security solutions and equipments. Even a company purchases an expensive solutions and equipment to protect their networks and computers, attackers will always find the way to barge through the cracks. Vaccine updates and security patches should become part of everyone’s daily activities,” director Cho Si-haeng of AhnLab R&D Center asserted.

Self caution is the key to prevent unexpected hacking. From the most recent news on August 7, 5:00 PM, e-mails have been spread around the world under the title "UPS Tracking Number SU48UYJ." The letter writes: Dear customer! We were not able to deliver your postal package which was sent on the 14th of July in time because the address was incorrect." Also in this e mail, UPSNR_1738627d.zip file was attached. Those netizens who decompressed the file were exposed to danger. To Korea and around the globe, malicious code is disguised as a UPS delivers mail to knock on random computer doors. AhnLab advised people to immediately erase the e-mails similar to this and signified the importance of self-awareness.

AhnLab seeks the full application of cloud computing in the future as a security solution. “Let’s say there is the cloud called Internet. The personal computers should be kept clean and simple, and the service must be received through the mediating equipment. The service can be provided within the cloud instead of bringing it from the cloud to place a service,” director Cho said.

With the continuous devolopment of security solutions, individual computer users must take an active role to be part of a cyberwatch to survive all chaotic cyber crises.
