Samsung Electronics will produce 1.5 million 40nm DDR3 DRAM memory chips in September, and 20 million such chips every month afterwards until December.
Samsung is increasing the production of 40nm DDR3 DRAM chips to a large extent to meet an increasing demand from server providers. Demand for the chips is rapidly rising as large server providers are in a hurry to convert their memory chips to the 40nm versions which promise to improve the performance of servers with low electricity consumption. The 40nm DDR3 DRAM chip can reduce electricity consumption by about 40 percent compared with the existing 50nm chip, as it needs a power supply of only 1.35V.
Samsung is going to further enhance technological leadership by helping server providers replace 16gb chips with 4gb or larger memory chips for desktop and notebook PCs.
