Samsung Electronics has begun mass production of its new M.2 NVMe SSD (Solid State Drive) that can fit into ultra-slim personal computers.

“Building on our success in creating a market for 2.5-inch NVMe servers back in 2013, we will continue to pull ahead of our competitors by shipping the M.2 NVMe SSD (model name: SM951-NVMe) to global manufacturers of ultrabooks starting this month,” Samsung said.

NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory) Express is a PCIe-based interface, designed to improve the performance of SSD-equipped servers and PCs and to add more flexibility to designing laptops. NVMe Express is over 6 times faster than the SATA interface.

The Samsung M.2 NVMe SSD measures 3.73 millimeters in thickness and 7 grams in weight, only a tenth the weight of other comparable 2.5-inch SSDs.

Above all, its 512 GB model, equipped with Samsung’s independently developed controller, flaunts sequential read and write speeds of 2,260 MB/sec and 1,600 MB/sec, which are four and three times faster than those of pre-existing M.2 SATA-based SSDs.
