Samsung Electronics embarked on the construction of the world’s largest semiconductor production line at the Godeok Industrial Complex in Pyeongtaek in Gyeonggi Province. The company plans to invest 15.6 trillion won to set up the production line, the largest single investment ever made by Korean companies.

Samsung’s investment in Pyeongtaek’s semiconductor line will come in three years after it made an investment for the establishment of the No. 17 production line at its Hawseong plant in 2012.

Samsung Electronics held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Pyeongtaek semiconductor plant at the Godeok Industrial Complex in the morning of May 7.

With this investment, Samsung Electronics plans to complete the establishment of its state-of-the-art semiconductor cluster linking Pyeongtaek with Kiheung and Hawseong, all within southern Gyeonggi Province.

Samsung’s Pyeongtaek semiconductor line will have a floor space of 2.89 million square meters, a scale equivalent to the sum of its existing plants in Kiheung and Hawseong. The size of the Pyeongtaek line will be more than twice larger than that of Samsung’s Xi’an plant which has a floor space of 1.39 million square meters.
