The Xperia C4, announced on May 6, is being marketed as a PROselfie phone.
Available with a single or dual SIM card slots, the Android handset has a fast 64-bit processor and full HD 5.5in display but it's the imaging capabilities that the company is hoping will appeal most to consumers.
The Xperia C4 boasts a front-facing 5-megapixel camera with a wide-angle lens for group selfies and a huge 13-megapixel rear-facing camera with auto focus and automatic support for HDR – High Dynamic Range.
And of course the hardware is backed by a host of photo manipulation software.
"We are proud to introduce Sony's evolved PROselfie smartphone," said Tony McNulty, vice-president, value category business management at Sony Mobile Communications. "Xperia C4 caters to consumers that want a smartphone that not only takes great photos, but also packs a punch."
The handset will go on sale in June when territory-by-territory pricing and 4G/LTE compatibility will be confirmed.
