LG Display Co. on Tuesday unveiled its latest TV creation, a detachable OLED 55-inch panel that can be magnetically stuck to and peeled off a wall.
In a media event in Seoul, the company showed the innovative panel with thickness of 0.97mm and weight of 1.9 kg, as well as a convex OLED panel for use in large digital signage for outdoor advertising.
Yeo Sang-deog, in charge of LG's OLED division, told a news conference that the company will significantly raise OLED output from this year’s third quarter. LG's 2015 sales target for OLED panels is 600,000 units and 1.5 million units for next year.
Yeo said the ability to raise yields for OLED panels has been key in raising such targets, citing the faster advances in OLED compared to LCD.
The company will keep its focus on large screens, with a 99-inch OLED panel set for release later this year, he added, and keep improving its plastic OLED technology for use in small to mid-size items like wearable devices or car dashboards.
LG also quoted University of Rochester professor Ching W. Tang, known as the father of OLED, as saying the OLED era will probably come within five to 10 years.
