A recent poll by Akamai Technologies might have picked Korea as having the world’s fastest Internet speeds, but another survey says the country isn’t even in the top five.
Ookla, a Seattle-based company specializing in broadband testing and web-based network diagnostic applications, on Tuesday gave Singapore has the highest consumer download index for broadband of 121.7Mpbs, with Korea a very distant sixth at 59.49.
The company site (netindex.com) said, “Based on millions of recent test results from Ookla Speedtest, this index compares and ranks consumer download speeds around the globe. The value is the rolling mean speed in Mbps over the past 30 days.”
Hong Kong came in a distant second with 102.56, followed by the French territory of Saint Pierre and Miquelon (88.19), Japan (82.38) and Romania (74.35).
In Korea, the southern port city of Gimhae had the highest figure of 83.33. Seoul was 30th with 58.91. Five of the top ten nations were in Asia, with Macau in ninth place with 51.06. Niger came in dead last among 200 countries with 1.3.
The U.S. came in 28th at 36.29, with Kansas topping all states with 47.57.
