Samsung has unveiled two new display screens that could change the way you view images in showrooms and view displays on cars and other transport vehicles.

The 55-inch transparent OLED screen can convert your car windshield into a Heads Up display unit and the mirror display can change the way retailers make you view and purchase goods.

Both displays are integrated with Intel Real Sense technology, which combines 3D cameras with an automated library of products the way people want to see it.

The transparent display has gesture and voice control features built-in and Real Sense 3D-rotatable viewing systems, and also enables Full HD video playback.

Currently, automobile industry is gearing up to a system that converts your existing windshield into a transparent screen through a projector especially like the one promised by Navdy and Garmin.

The next-gen car display

Navdy, which received a $3million funding from Qualcomm ventures towards the project, is expected to retail the HUD solution by the year-end.

The Heads Up Display (HUD) segment has been gaining prominence due to increasing safety concerns among motorists. According to recent industry estimates, the global automotive HUD market to grow at a CAGR of 39.20 per cent in terms of unit shipment over the period 2014-2019.

Samsung’s latest announcement takes the technology to the next level, converting the entire windshield into a display screen, eliminating the need for a projector altogether.

The world’s first 55-inch transparent OLED screen also enables products to be showcased on walls resembling glass doors and panels. The glass door at your home or office can very well be converted into a display screen.

But Samsung is currently hoping that fashion and retail chains will benefit most from its latest product. Apart from the transparent screen it also showcased a mirror display – that it hopes will enable a user to virtually “see” clothes or other retail items from an extremely realistic, customized perspective.

The Samsung Mirror Display may also replace home mirrors in the future, providing digital information services to sophisticated consumers in the same space where they now just have a traditional mirror.

According to Samsung the Mirror OLED display panel has more than 75 per cent reflectance level and delivers at least 50 per cent higher reflectance than competing Mirror LCDs. In addition, the new mirror display technology does not need the ambient backlight for displaying on-screen images that LCD technology requires.

“Together, the two technologies create a “virtual fitting room”, which will be used to help consumers vividly see themselves wearing clothing apparel, shoes or jewellery that they might wish to buy. Once retailers adopt the combined Samsung-Intel “personalization” virtual imaging solution, consumers will be able to go to leading stores around the world to see retail items in ways that will greatly enhance point-of-purchase shopping as we know it today,” a Samsung statement said.
