A 4G-based mobile telecom service Voice over LTE (VoLTE) is set to be commercialized in Korea, first in the world.
The Ministry of Science, ICT, and Future Planning announced on June 17 that it will go for full-scale commercialization of VoLTE service after launching the trial service from the end of this month.
VoLTE is a data-based voice calling service which is offered through 4G LTE. Unlike existing 2G and 3G network-using voice calls which use circuit method, VoLTE transmits by dividing data into certain packet size. Compared to 2G and 3G network services, VoLTE boasts a higher level of network efficiency.
As the first step towards VoLTE commercialization, the government plans to provide VoLTE trial service to a handful of subscribers starting from the end of this month. Each mobile carrier will select a group of people who can experience the trial service among its subscribers and power bloggers.
The government expects all of the people who have VoLTE handsets to be able to enjoy high-quality VoLTE service from November this year.
