Daum Kakao is speeding up its “select-and-focus” strategy.
While developing a string of new services which meet the latest mobile user trends, Daum Kakao is also boldly shutting down less-profitable businesses.
Daum Kakao announced on June 23 that it will terminate its personal customized contents recommendation service Kakao Topic on August 31. A company official said, “We decided to terminate the Kakao Topic service since its service area overlaps with Daum Mobile, a mobile news content platform.”
Kakao Topic is a service that recommends various contents in areas like news, fashion/beauty, humor and travel, based on automatic algorithms and enables users to share them with their acquaintances.
Daum Kakao has provided the service contents through formation of partnerships not only with existing media outlets but with famous bloggers, magazines and communities. The number of downloads remained relatively low at less than 500,000 in three months after launch.
